tutoringExtended Day and Jumpstart Tutoring for qualifying students begins Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2:30-4:00.

Soccer Tryouts for the 4th-6th Grade Coed Soccer Team are Wednesday, January 23 on the Soccer Field. Boys: 2:15-3:30 and Girls: 3:30-4:30. Students must have a signed permission slip in order to try out.

downloadFinney is honored to partner with the La Jolla Playhouse to bring their Arts Academy program to our students! This grant-funded project places professional teaching artists in schools with classroom teachers to incorporate theatre activities and exercises into existing curriculum.

Joy-of-GivingThe PTA Holiday Gift Shop is this week, Dec. 10-14 in Room 201, where students can buy gifts for family members. The shop is open before and after school, and during morning recess. Students can bring money in the sealed envelope that was sent home last week, or you can avoid using cash by purchasing gift certificates at holidayshop.org/giftcert. The Finney Project Pie Fundraiser to benefit 6th Grade is this Thursday, Dec. 6 5:00-8:00 at Project Pie at the Chula Vista Mall. Present the flyer and 30% of proceeds go to Finney 6th Grade! Just a few missed days here and there, even if they are excused absences, can add up to much lost learning time and put your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school. Give your child the gift of excellent attendance this holiday season!

Kindergarten registration for 2019-2020 starts February 20! Let’s fill up those classes early to ensure we can keep all of our fabulous Finney teachers. Tell your friends, family and neighbors who have a child turning 5 years old by September 1, 2019.

Congratulations to Room 203 Mrs. Gillespie’s class for having 100% attendance last week! Our school attendance rate last week was 96%. This is too low! Our goal is 98%. We can do it! Be a part of your child’s academic success by bringing them to school every day on time.

As a reminder, Finney has a Dress Code, which is located in the Finney Parent Handbook. Here are some highlights from the dress code:

  • For safety reasons,  students need to wear closed toe shoes with gripping,  non-slip soles suitable for physical education. 
  • Shorts need to pass the student’s fingertips when arms are at his/her sides.
  • Tank tops must have straps at least 3 fingers wide, and no crop tops are allowed.

Finney cares! During the month of November, we are collecting toys and non-perishable food for those in need.

The Annual Turkey Trot 5th Grade Fundraiser is Friday, Nov. 16th at 8:30 am. Please return the permission slip you received from your child’s teacher. Students must have a signed permission slip in order to run on Friday. Each child who turns in sponsorships will be entered for a chance to win a Turkey Dinner basket.

Remember, coming to school on every day on time is the first smart choice your child makes in their academic career. Please be a part of your child’s success by bringing them to school early. They can eat breakfast at school starting at 7:15.  School begins at 7:45 am. Students are required to be lined up on the blacktop when the bell rings at 7:45, or they are marked tardy.

It’s Red Ribbon Week! Each year, Red Ribbon celebrations bring communities together to take a stand on making smart choices, reducing violence, and committing to be drug-free. Student Council is sponsoring the following Spirit Days this week:

Friday, October 26 is the Finney Fall Festival, 4:30-7:00 pm. Join us for fun, food, and games while supporting your school! Costumes are welcome!fall festival

Friday, October 26 is the annual Finney Costume Parade at 8:30 on the east blacktop. Families are welcome, and can enter through the side gate on the east side of the auditorium for this event. Student costumes guidelines:

  • Faces must not be covered up.  Masks will be allowed during parade only.
  • Costumes are to be tasteful and appropriate.
  • Blood, guts and/or gore are not allowed.
  • Fake guns, swords, knives or anything resembling a weapon is not allowed.
  • Costumes must not require parent or adult assistance.
  • Students participating in the parade should arrive to school in their costume and remain in costume all day.
  • Students not participating will be supervised in the library.
  • No costumes allowed at school on Oct. 31.

Finney Student Council is sponsoring “SOCKTOBER” clean sock drive for families in need. Bring NEW socks Oct. 15-31 and they will be donated to Father Joe’s Village.
